A Lifeline for Anna and Joshua

When Anna welcomed her son Joshua into the world, she was full of excitement and love. But as a first-time mum raising a baby on her own, things soon began to feel overwhelming.
Having recently moved to the area, Anna had no local support network. When Joshua was just three months old, her Health Visitor referred her to Home-Start South Warwickshire.
Looking back, Anna describes that time as filled with anxiety and self-doubt.“I was full of anxiety and constantly doubting myself,” she says. “Every little decision felt scary because I just wanted the best for Joshua.”
Anna was matched with a Home-Start volunteer who began visiting each week and that consistent, compassionate support quickly became a turning point.
“The support was invaluable,” Anna says.
Her volunteer offered a listening ear, reassurance and practical help. Together they talked through the everyday challenges of parenting and found a routine that worked for Anna and Joshua.

“She helped me see that every family is different and what works for one may not work for another,” Anna explains. “It made me realise that what I’m doing is not wrong.”
With that encouragement, Anna’s confidence began to grow.
The support was practical as well as emotional. The volunteer would spend time with Joshua, taking him out for walks, going to the park or playing at home. This gave Anna time to rest, catch up on household tasks and begin to feel more in control.
During this time, Joshua built a close bond with the volunteer, and Anna began to feel more comfortable trusting someone else to care for him.
“It helped me trust others and trust myself that he was okay,” she says.

As Anna started thinking about returning to work, her volunteer was there to help with job searches and applications, offering practical support at every step.
Reflecting on her experience, Anna is clear about the difference Home-Start made.
“Without Home-Start, the postpartum period would have been a struggle. A lonely struggle,” she says. “It has literally been a lifeline.”
Why support like this matters
Anna’s story is not unique. Many families we support are facing isolation, anxiety and a lack of practical help at a time when they need it most.
Our volunteers step into that gap, offering time, care and reassurance that can change the course of a family’s life. But we can only do this with your help.
Help us be there for more families
Right now, there are more families who need support like this.
Volunteer your time and help a family build confidence and resilience
Donate so we can continue to provide vital support to those who need it most
Every hour given and every pound donated helps us reach another parent who might otherwise be struggling alone.
As Anna says:“Don’t give it a second thought. Just go for it. You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain.”
