At Home-Start South Warwickshire, our volunteers give something incredibly valuable – their time, empathy and a listening ear. Maddy shares what inspired her to join and the difference she has seen.
Inspired by Lived Experience
Maddy’s journey into volunteering began through a friend who co-manages the Banbury branch of Home-Start.
“When she told me about the amazing work her team do, it sounded like such a respectful, caring approach to supporting families. It really resonated with me.”

Remembering her own struggles as a new mum, Maddy felt drawn to offer support to other parents facing challenges.
“With both families, I’ve worked hard on learning how to really listen and create a safe space for them to talk about their difficulties. It’s a constant learning curve, encouraging empowerment rather than telling them what to do.”
Seeing Confidence Grow
For Maddy, the most rewarding part of volunteering is seeing parents gain confidence.
“What is most pleasing is seeing the mums becoming stronger, more confident and making great choices that positively affect their mental health and practical lives.”
A standout moment has been supporting a mum to restart her career in Occupational Therapy after having twins.
“Seeing mother, father and young babies thriving as a result has been incredibly rewarding.”
Maddy hopes the difference she has made is helping parents recognise their strengths and their worth.
“My current family has been really appreciative of my support and of Home-Start, and I can see a massive difference in their situation and for the future.”
Why Volunteer with Home-Start South Warwickshire
“It is extremely rewarding to work with families in need and know that simple acts of kindness and support from fellow mums make a real difference.”
She also values the support from the Home-Start team.
“The staff, such as Kate and Sarah, are professional, supportive and always there for us as volunteers with guidance and ideas.”

About Maddy
Maddy is a single mum to a 10-year-old son. She works part-time and uses one morning a week to volunteer for two to three hours, alongside regular check-ins between visits. Supporting and mentoring others has always been important to her, and volunteering fits naturally around her work and family life.
