Getting Her Pink Back – Rose’s Story

Rose and Chris were first introduced to Home-Start South Warwickshire during Rose’s pregnancy with their youngest daughter, Willow. Despite their joy at becoming parents again, the couple felt overwhelmed by the thought of managing a newborn, two other children, and the day-to-day demands of family life.

Rose explains that she struggled with a lack of external support from family and friends and worried that asking for help would be seen as an inconvenience. With ongoing mental health challenges and difficult memories of the postnatal period with her older children, she was understandably apprehensive.

When Rose was referred to Home-Start, she had never heard of us before — but she was keen to try. Soon, she was matched with a volunteer who visited weekly, offering both practical help and much-needed emotional support.

Rose reflects on the impact:

“When flamingos become parents, they lose their pink colour as they give everything to their offspring. Home-Start South Warwickshire and my volunteer gave me my pink back. I was able to feel like me again, not just a Mum.”

The reassurance of knowing someone would be there each week reduced Rose’s anxiety and gave her confidence. With her volunteer’s support, she began attending groups independently, found time to organise the home, and was able to enjoy precious moments with Willow, Lily and Ivy.

Looking back, Rose is clear: without Home-Start, the postpartum period would have been “very different” — more chaotic, more isolating, and far more difficult.

Now, Rose and Chris are focused on creating a loving, stable home for their children, a place that feels emotionally safe, and a marriage that shows their children “how to love and be loved.”

Rose’s gratitude extends to everyone who makes Home-Start possible:

“I cannot ever express the love, support and confidence I have felt. My volunteer is incredible — I will be forever thankful to have met her. One day, I hope to volunteer myself and pay forward even a small amount of what I have gained.”

At Home-Start South Warwickshire, stories like Rose’s remind us why we exist: to give parents the support, strength and confidence to be the best they can be for their children. Sometimes, that means helping them get their pink back.

If Rose’s story has inspired you, you could make a difference too. Find out more about becoming a Home-Start South Warwickshire volunteer here: Volunteer with us 🌸
