Finding Strength Through Support

When Claire and Alex became new parents, they were overwhelmed by a deep sense of isolation. With no close friends or family nearby, and limited connection to their local community, they struggled to cope.

“We were really struggling as new parents, on our own, with no friends or family nearby… we didn’t really even know our neighbours.”

Both Claire and Alex were experiencing very poor mental health, and Claire — unknowingly — was suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder following the birth.

“Things felt quite hopeless and incredibly difficult… we kept wondering if we had made a mistake by having a baby.”

Their Health Visitor raised concerns about their wellbeing, and a referral to Home-Start South Warwickshire followed. It was then that things began to shift.

Claire and Alex were introduced to a local Home-Start volunteer who began visiting them regularly each week. This consistency proved vital. The couple didn’t have to explain everything afresh each time, and the growing trust they built with their volunteer gave them breathing space. Claire was able to begin taking small but important steps towards self-care.

As her psychologist appointments began, the family relied on their Home-Start volunteer for trusted childcare, something they otherwise had no access to. Without this support, Claire feels she would never have been able to attend those crucial sessions.

“I know I would be in a much darker place emotionally without these appointments.”

With support from Home-Start, the family started to feel more confident, more connected, and more hopeful about the future. They now feel able to move forward together.

Reflecting on the support they received, Claire shares:

“They have been a wonderful bright spot in my week… I won’t ever forget that support.”

To other families considering reaching out, Claire offers this advice:

“Always ask. Home-Start is a fabulous place to begin.”
